St Helens Tourism and Leisure Awards

Roger PhillipsSt.Helens has again honoured the stars of its successful tourism and leisure industry at a high profile event attended by key figures from across the St.Helens, Merseyside and Northwest tourism industry.


The winners of the 13 categories at this year’s St.Helens Tourism and Leisure Awards were saluted in style at a special ‘Oscar-style’ evening gala at Haydock Park Racecourse on Friday 25 January, compered by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips (pictured).

The keynote speech was given by Richard Frediani, Head of News at Granada TV while also paying tribute to the excellent work being done in the Northwest, Merseyside, and St.Helens itself.


The award winners were:

St Helens Ambassador: Keith Naylor at St.Helens Council

Entrepreneur of the Year: Edwina and Alan Abbott at Fir Tree Farm

2007 Young Chef award : Chloe Brown at Colours Restaurant.
Most Welcoming Receptionist: Emma Carter of Renaissance Health & Beauty

Most Helpful Retail Assistant : Christine Owens of Tyrers

Most Professional Sports & Leisure Person: Jim Flatley, Queens Park Leisure Centre,

Tourism, Hospitality, Retail or Leisure Apprentice of the Year: Jac Davies of Thistle Hotel Haydock

Most Professional Bar Person : Emma Wood of Zoo Café Bar

Most Professional Waiter/Waitress: Pam Simpson of The World of Glass

The Unseen Hero: John Herriott of St.Helens Council

Chef of the Year: Gary Morgan of Fir Tree Farm

Most Supportive Tourism/Leisure Manager/Supervisor: Anne Parfitt, Holiday Inn Haydock

Team of the Year: Houghwood Golf  


Dickon White, Managing Director of Haydock Park Racecourse and Chairman of the St.Helens Tourism and Leisure Business Network, said: “

With such an array of talent, St.Helens will continue to go from strength to strength as an up and coming regional visitor destination.  Events such as this show what can be achieved by the private sector working in close partnership with public agencies such as St.Helens Council, The Mersey Partnership, and the Northwest Development Agency”.

Cllr. Neil Taylor, Executive Member for Urban Regeneration at St.Helens Council commented:

“The nature of this event reflects why the St.Helens tourism & leisure industry is a growing success story, in terms of both the excellence of the people involved plus the way in which key partners work together towards a common goal. This marks the beginning of yet another very exciting year in tourism terms for St.Helens, Merseyside and the Northwest”.
